The University of Texas at Dallas in Richardson has several treasures, and 93-year-old Helen Small is one of them.
She's from Ohio and dropped out of college in 1938 to get married and raise a family. She, her husband Al and their sons moved to Dallas in 1953.
She stayed busy with their homebuilding business and raising the three boys, who all became doctors.
Helen and Al had been married for 61 years when he died. Afterward, Helen decided to get her college degree.
At age 87, she earned her B.A. in psychology at UTD. She was 90 years old when she earned her master's degree.
For Helen, education opens all doors to life, and she urges everyone to keep learning and keep going as they age.
For the past year, she's volunteered at UTD every Tuesday in Special Collections.
There, she catalogues photographs and documents that tell the history of her alma mater, and she loves every second.
In April, she'll mark two highlights – UTD will recognize her for her volunteer service, and she'll celebrate her 94th birthday. Happy Birthday, Helen!
