Wilmer Hutchins basketball player killed in fight

Posted: Updated:

A Dallas high school student was beaten to death outside his home in southeast Oak Cliff.

Neighbors told police they saw two people fighting Troy Causey in the street Sunday evening. Causey fell to the ground unconscious, and they suspects took off running along the 3200 block of Little River Drive.

The 18-year-old was hospitalized with severe head injuries including a fractured skull and bleeding and swelling in the brain. He died the next day.

Causey was a basketball player at Wilmer Hutchins High School.

"A young kid goes outside just to retrieve something out of a car and minutes later he's beaten up by two strangers," said former DISD board member Ron Price.

Causey was the son of Price's cousin.

Family members said he was scheduled to visit a college this week. He was hoping for a scholarship.

"It was so sad," said Dionte Gray, a classmate of Causey's at Wilmer Hutchins High. "We couldn't even do out work today. It wasn't the same without him. He had the class laughing and everything, but today it was just sad."

Police are still looking for those responsible for his death.

Causey's family says they'll donate his organs in hopes that his death may help others.
