Body of Dallas hoarder found in home after days of searching

Posted: Updated:

A Dallas man who had so much clutter inside his home that it took authorities days to locate him inside was found dead in the home on Thursday, according to police.

The victim was a 67-year-old man. Police have not released his name, but his friends identified him to FOX 4 as Skip Bynum. The home he was found in is in the 6200 block of Martel Avenue.

On Saturday afternoon, police responded to a call to check on Bynum after friends said he hadn't been feeling well and didn't show up at an event. Police and Dallas Fire Rescue responded and tried to search the home, but due to large amounts of debris inside, they were unable to find Bynum.

Fire officials eventually cut holes into the roof and crawled in the attic to gain entry, and they searched through several piles of debris in their search for Bynum.

Search teams with dogs were also unable to locate the man. Finally, the city attorney's office secured a warrant for the home to remove some of the debris inside.

Contractors who were hired to begin the removal process reported they found they man's body Thursday. Workers in HAZMAT suits and breathing gear could be seen removing load after load of trash, outdated electronics, and random odds and ends from the home.

The last time Bynum had been heard from was March 15.

The man's friends say they've been on him for two decades about the deplorable conditions he lived in.

"We have raised Cain with him for 20 years," said Leo Gregg, a friend of Bynum's. "Sell the house, let them bulldoze it. And go somewheres else. I mean, beyond hope 20 years ago."

Gregg was able to save Bynum's beloved Chihuahua mix from the mess.

"He's the type of guy, if he thought you needed the shirt off your back, he'd give it to you," said Gregg.
