Detroit taxi driver shot on the job, apparently over fare that hadn't been paid

DETROIT (WJBK) - A taxi cab driver is recovering after getting shot while on the job in Detroit.

Eric Sydes says he dropped a customer off around 2 a.m. on Whitcome Avenue on the city's west side, near Greenfield Road and Grand River Avenue.

Sydes says the passenger told him to wait while she went inside to get the money to pay the cab fare. Sydes says she went to the home next to the address she gave him.

Sydes, thinking maybe she was friends with her neighbor, waited for about ten minutes before going up to knock on the door.

He says a man answered and insisted no woman had come inside, and that she had cut through the backyard. Sydes insisted he saw the woman enter the house through the side door.

He let it go, though, and returned back to his vehicle. Just as he had opened to door to get inside, he says he heard the shot - and felt it at the same time.

"I dropped down and said, 'Damn, you just shot me!'" he remembers.

To dodge the bullets, Sydes used his vehicle for cover.

"I'm looking at him through the window of the cab and he shot three more times, and the fourth time he shot out the passenger rear window," Sydes says.

He was able to get away safely by ducking down in his cab and driving away. He says he wishes he avoided the confrontation by requiring a deposit or the cab fare upfront.

Sydes has worked as independent contractor for Checkered Cab since 2011. A spokesperson says the company's safety training says cab drivers aren't suppose to get out of their cab or run after a fare that owes you money.

They say the company is cooperating with police and they are glad Sydes is going to be okay.

"Whether I asked for a deposit or not, to do that is just showing the times we live in," he says.

He says he will change his ways but will continue to be a taxi cab driver.
