Catelli Brother’s Respond To Slaughterhouse Protest

Posted: Updated:
Shrewsbury, New Jersey (My9NJ) - This weekend a local New Jersey group held a peaceful protest outside of Catelli Brother’s slaughterhouse in Shrewsbury, NJ. Catelli Brothers was shut down by the U.S. Department of Agriculture after an investigation by the Humane Society showed still-conscious calves hanging upside down on a conveyor belt, and a calf being prodded while struggling to walk.

Catelli Brothers has now been cleared and reopened for business, but some in the state disagree with the reopening, including Amy Horowitz an organizer for the group NJ Farm Animals Save.

“The vigil is just to raise public awareness about the tremendous cruelty to animals and like Paul McCartney said, ‘If slaughterhouses had glass walls, we would all be vegetarian’,” she said.

On Saturday about 30 people stood out in the rain in front of the Catelli Brothers slaughterhouse holding signs that read, “Honk if you love animals,” and “Meat, dairy and eggs are murder.” The group was made up of mostly vegans who particularly are upset over the killing of baby animals for veal and lamb.

“I don’t even think people in Shrewsbury know what is going on right under their noses. There’s actually an eyebrow bar (next door) so just thinking women are sitting there having their eyebrows shaved without any idea of what’s going on 50-feet away,” Horowitz said.

In a statement the Catelli Brothers said: “At Catelli Brothers we believe we have an ethical obligation for the well being of calves that are in our care and our commitment to food safety is a top priority. Though a recent investigation by the USDA found practices that were not aligned with our training and values, our established practices strictly prohibit the processes of sick or unhealthy calves. The USDA investigation found no evidence that our strict standards were violated.”

Since then, the company has also installed a 24/7 third-party remote video surveillance to audit animal handling and processing procedures.

On Thursday, Hillary Clinton made her one and only book stop in Ridgewood, New Jersey promoting her memoir, Hard Choices, which details her life as Secretary of State. This one stop ironically was on the same day that Governor Chris Christie was out of town in Iowa on several fundraising stops. Was his absence a coincidence?
