CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago police are searching for a gunman who shot and wounded two small children, ages 5 and 3, and their grandmother while they were walking in the South Shore neighborhood Tuesday night.

Police don't have a lot go on right now - only a vague description of a getaway vehicle. The woman and her grandchildren are not believed to be the intended targets.

Area residents say the swift police response made a difference. Police patrolling a block away heard the shooting about 8 p.m. and found the scene at 78th and Kingston. Police told FOX 32 news they were in the area Tuesday night because there has been increased gang activity there.

A 5-year-old boy suffered a through-and-through gunshot wound to the abdomen and was taken by paramedics to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in "guarded" condition, authorities said. The bullet traveled through his stomach and exited through his lower back.

An evidence technician carried the 3-year-boy, who was shot in the shoulder, to an unmarked police car and took him to La Rabida Children's Hospital. The boy was transferred to Comer in good condition, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Larry Langford said.

Both boys were listed in "stable" condition Wednesday morning, police said.

Their 51-year-old grandmother was shot in the upper leg and was in critical condition Wednesday morning at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.

Area South investigators spoke to neighbors about the shooting in the 2500 block of East 78th Street. A gray van was reported leaving the scene, but police say they could use more cooperation from the public.

There were no suspects in custody Wednesday, so the gunman is still out there. Holmes hopes reports of this incident will motivate people to come forward with information.

"We have two little boys in the hospital," community activist Andrew Holmes told FOX 32. "Someone knows something and they have to come forward. What they know might prevent the next shooting."
