Happily disgusted, disgustedly surprised and many more facial expressions

MYFOXNY.COM -

Happily disgusted, disgustedly surprised, sadly fearful. I'm not sure what that is. But these are among the 21 new facial expressions, according to a study out of Ohio State University.

The long accepted number has been six: happy, sad, fearful, angry, surprised and disgusted. So Dr. Alexi Martinez and a team of researchers from Ohio State photographed 230 people and their expressions. A computer analysis turned up 21 emotions based on the basic six.

Cognitive scientists, like Dr. Martinez, use facial expressions to track the genetic and chemical pathways that transmit emotions in the brain, such as my reaction to getting assigned this story. It could have ranged from happily surprised to angrily disgusted to some of the other expressions: sadly fearful, sadly angry, sadly surprised, fearfully angry even fearfully surprised.

Meanwhile, I conducted my own street research. My iPhone has more than 60 emoticon expressions. So could there be more than 21 as found in the study?

Fox 5 found that romance is almost completely alive and well in Harlem. The notion of one a soul mate, your better half, the one and only is thriving. Maybe have Cinderella or rather reality television to thank for this notion.Sadly, new research shows if you believe your partner is your soul mate your expectations may be to high when times get tough.
