Cactus League draws 1.68 million fans this spring

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - The Cactus League Baseball Association says about 1.68 million fans attended baseball games around Arizona this spring.

The total was lower than last year's 1.73 million fans because of fewer game days this year.

There were 32 game days this spring compared to 37 in 2013.

The Arizona Diamondbacks missed nine days of Cactus League play and the Los Angeles Dodgers 13 days because they had to travel to Australia to open the regular season.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs' first spring in their new ballpark in Mesa set a league attendance record with 213,815 fans in 15 games.

That broke the previous mark of 203,105 set by the Cubs in 2009 at HoHoKam Stadium.

Cactus officials say the league generates more than $632 million annually in economic impact for Arizona.
