Man's leg severed during newspaper box truck crash

Posted: Updated:
SURPRISE, Ariz. -

A man's leg was severed after he crashed a newspaper box truck into a guard rail on Loop 303 near Grand Avenue early Wednesday morning.

A passerby called around 2 a.m. to report a rolled over truck in the area.

Department of Public Safety Sgt. Jason Yeager says there was one occupant standing in the rolled over truck when crews arrived.

They later came to find out the guard rail had crashed through the truck and severed one of the man's legs.

The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Yeager says it looks like he could have fallen asleep at the wheel; they don't suspect he was under the influence.

The Wickenburg Sun reports the driver's name is Mark Hranek.

Hranek is a delivery driver for the newspaper and had several hundred of them in the back of the box truck.

Loop 303 was shutdown in both directions at Grand Avenue for part of the morning.
