Young Dallas golfer to compete in national competition

Posted: Updated:

A young Dallas golfer was invited to golf's equivalent to the national Punt, Pass and Kick competition. It's part of Master's Week at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.

FOX 4's Tim Ryan tried to catch up with 8-year-old Andrew Petruzzelli.

Andrew started playing with a set of plastic clubs, imitating his parents who are both avid golfers. They quickly saw the kind of dedication that is rare in a child and, frankly, a lot of adults.

"The first time he played nine holes was in Florida with some friends and afterwards he spent an hour on the putting green," said Debbie Petruzzelli, Andrew's mother.

The third grader at the academically challenging Dallas International School is fluent in French, Spanish and English. But he's still a kid. His favorite subject is really PE.

"Does PE count?" he asked.

"No. PE does not count and lunch does not count," Tim said.

"Does computer class count?" Andrew asked.

"Computer class would count. Yes," Tim said.

Andrew is one of only 88 kids from around the nation chosen for the first Drive, Chip and Putt finals this weekend.

He's serious about golf, but not that serious.

"I find it fun and sometimes it can be really difficult because you have to aim and do all the stuff," he said.

"Have you ever thrown a club?" Tim asked.

"I've thrown it, but it was an accident because I let go of the club," Andrew said.

His parents said that while Andrew is competitive, it's got to be fun. After all, it's a game and he's still a kid.

"In 20 years, what do you think you're doing?" Tim asked.

"I don't know that yet," Andrew said.

The Drive, Chip and Putt competition will be televised Sunday on the Golf Channel.
