Community Rallies To Help Teen Get A New Wheelchair

Posted: Updated:
Bordentown, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Imagine suddenly losing control of your arms and legs and not getting any answers from doctors as to why it happened. Sadly, that’s reality for Dawud Hamden of Bordentown, New Jersey who at age 13 was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a rare bacterial infection that affects the spinal cord.

When the insurance company wouldn’t pay for the $53,000 power wheelchair Hamden needs to get the best use of his arms and legs the family set up the page “Dawud’s wheels” on giveforward.com, and an entire New Jersey community rallied together to help.

“I never really expected anything out of it, it was kind of like a joke when we started into it, I was only expecting like a few thousand dollars out of it, but when we got passed 24-hours we had over $8,000. It’s just surreal to see like, just like the feeling,” Hamden explained.

The family has raised over $30,000 in just 46-days through the website as people in Bordentown and across the state stepped up to the plate to help.

Words of well wishes and compassion are displayed throughout the website where friends and strangers alike took the time to donate and send positive vibes Dawud’s way.

Here are just a few:

Gregg Hollmann, Ambient DJ Service
“Dawud, though we've never met, I was touched by your story. I hope that you get your new set of wheels very soon!”

“Saw a flyer at Bordentown Bagels and just wanted to acknowledge the positive spirit in the eyes of Dawud. Your story moved me and I wanted to wish you all the best on your journey.”

The Mihalecsko Family
“You have so many people rooting for you! Best of luck at college! You’re an honors student, what’s next for you?”

Luckily for Hamden, he continues to have high aspirations.

“Actually just recently I received a letter saying that I’ve been accepted to Monmouth University which is probably one of the top schools that I’ve been looking into,” he explained.

Hamden said that he looks forward to being more independent once he gets his new set of wheels.

“After I received a spinal fusion last year, feeling in my legs have increased significantly to the point where I can’t even straighten them anymore, and after a while of trying to use medication to solve the problem I’ve actually hit the max dose of medication that I can receive based on my weight and my height and everything. So we’ve tried standing as another option because standing releases muscles and everything and with this (wheelchair) I can just do it on my own. I don’t’ have to ask anybody for help for me to stand, I don’t have to bother anybody it’s just for me, I can just do it on my own,” he said.

Some residents of West New York, New Jersey are happy with their beautiful views of Manhattan, but aren’t too happy about the noise that is coming over from the city. Residents who live at the Hudson Club apartment complex at Port Imperial say that the music that reportedly comes from a new concert hall at Pier 97 across the Hudson River in New York City is affecting their quality of life.
