Drones Over New Jersey

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - While New Jersey is a beautiful state, the first picturesque place you’d think of isn’t exactly the state's capital of Trenton. However, retired New Jersey police officer Butch Osterman begs to differ. With the help of a new toy, a Phantom Quadcopter II drone, Osterman has captured some of the most gorgeous aerial views of Trenton’s most well-known monuments.

Among some of the lovely aerial shots are the Trenton Battle Monument, the Trenton Makes Bridge, and the beautiful Delaware River. Osterman hopes to share his story and images with the rest of the Garden State.

“I’ve been working in Trenton for 20 plus years, you tend to see the beautiful things within the city along with the ugly but I try to concentrate on some of the beauty and the architecture of the old buildings,” Osterman explained.

While he doesn’t expect to turn this artistry into a new career, Osterman does have an motivating reason for the budding interest in Trenton’s overseen beauty.

“What started it was a few years ago in the Trenton public library they have this section called the Trentoniana collection and they have thousands of old pictures within the library. And when I was looking through some of those they have aerial photos that were taken back in the 20s, 30s, and up until present day. Just amazing! So what I wanted to do actually was to get pictures of then and now. So I actually went up in a helicopter a couple times to recreate those old photos and I can never really copy those exact pictures, so when I saw this I thought ‘This is perfect’,” Osterman said.

Good things don’t come without controversy and that is the case with the drone Osterman is using. Recently a guy in New York filmed with his drone and he was arrested.

There are restrictions for flying a drone. Among the rules are: you can’t use it for commercial purposes and it must stay under 400 feet. Osterman fears that the joy of working with drones will one day be ruined by all the regulations.

“You know that’s gonna happen and it’s going to ruin it for those folks who use it for legitimate purposes. So until there are stricter regulations I’m going to enjoy the use of it as much as I can,” Osterman stated.
