Camden City Officials Raid The Wheels Of Soul Motorcycle Club

Posted: Updated:
CAMDEN, N.J. -

Camden City Officials brought out the bulldozers to send a message to an outlawed motorcycle club.

They carried out a raid on "The Wheels of Soul Motorcycle Club" on Wednesday morning.

Fox 29's Bruce Gordon has the live report.

The Wheels of Soul Motorcycle Club has been in trouble with the law sporadically for more than three decades, and the alleged gunpoint rape of a woman inside that clubhouse early last Thursday police say was the last straw.

Camden Police and Code Officials brought in heavy equipment to tear down and clear away a cinder block annex and garage to the Wheels of Soul Motorcycle Club on Princess Avenue.

Officials say it was built illegally on city property. The clubhouse next door was shut down for health and safety violations and for being an on-going criminal nuisance, officials also said.

County Police Chief Scott Thompson says the club and its headquarters have been linked to drugs and violence since at leave the late '70's.

There were plenty of onlookers as police swooped in, but no one was willing to criticize the club. In fact, a few neighbors sang their praises.

"They're good people," one former neighbor said, "They give out supplies, school supplies to kids. They give out, Halloween. They have parties for the kids. Give out gifts and everything for the kids.

"They give out turkeys on thanksgiving and then 364 days of the year they're engaging in criminal activity," one police officer said.

We're told a couple of people were inside the structure when it was raided this morning, but there were no incidents. No arrests were made.

Police have been down this road before. They closed the Wheels of Soul Clubhouse back in 2010. The club fought successfully in court to reopen about half a year later. Police fully expect another court battle over this latest shut down.
