Boy's gesture to soldier turns into huge fundraiser

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - This touching story begins with Myles Eckert, a nine-year-old boy who found $20 dollars at a Cracker Barrel.

Instead of keeping it, Myles decided to give it away to a United States soldier – Lt. Col. Frank Dailey.

He attached a note that read: “Dear Soldier -- my dad was a soldier. He's in heaven now. I found this 20 dollars in the parking lot when we got here. We like to pay it forward in my family. It's your lucky day! Thank you for your service. Myles Eckert, a gold star kid."

Army Sgt. Andy Ekert was killed in Iraq when Myles was just five weeks old.

Since Myles’ story has gone viral, people around the world have been trying to pay it forward to the Eckerts.

Tiffany said, “Together as a family we decided to direct these people to make donations to Snowball Express, which is a program for other Gold Star kids like Myles and his sister.”

She said the Dallas-based company Highland Capital Management has pledged to match up to one million dollars of the donations made from now until Memorial Day.

As of Apr. 3, 2014, the campaign had raised nearly $200,000.

Going off to college is an exciting time for the entire family, especially for the upcoming freshman. But with technology, parents can be in touch all the time. What's too much and what's just enough? Freshman move-in day seems to be harder on the parents than the students at Stony Brook University.
