DALLAS -

An off-duty Dallas police officer was involved in a fatal shooting Friday morning.

Lt. Max Geron, a spokesman for the Dallas Police Department, said it happened around 9:30 a.m. on S. Lamar Street, near police headquarters.

Employees at Wells Wrecking noticed a suspicious man within their fenced-in property and tried to escort him off the property. As they were doing so, he attacked a male employee with a knife.

Sgt. Jackie Moore was on her way to work and happened to be across the street. She heard screams and rushed over.

She saw the attack taking place and fired her weapon, killing the suspect. The suspect was later identified as 26-year-old Codi Ben Bullard.

Police said they don't know why Bullard was on the property with a weapon, nor do they know the motive behind his alleged attack. They hope to learn more from the victim, who is now recovering in the hospital.

Sgt. Moore is a 15-year veteran of the force assigned to the Northwest Patrol.

She was not hurt.
