Summary of Position: The Assistant Teacher is responsible for supporting the implementation and coordination of the comprehensive global education program in the classroom. The Assistant Teacher follows the direction of the Lead Teacher to ensure that the classroom activities and environment are developmentally appropriate and reflect West Cook YMCA's philosophy and curriculum. The Assistant Teacher helps to ensure that the individual needs of the children are met as mandated by federal, state and local standards.


• A minimum of High School diploma with 6 college level coursework hours in Early Childhood Education/Child Development. An Associate's Degree in ECE/CD with 2 years of teaching experience is preferred.

• CPR/First Aid certification required within first 6 months of employment.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Computer literate with experience using Microsoft applications and Creative Curriculum implementation.

• Must have excellent command of the English language and grammar, both verbal and written. Bi-lingual Spanish preferred.

• Administration --under the supervision of the classroom lead teacher:

o Work to develop and maintain educational information for each child.

o Work to ensure all required program documentation is completed accurately and submitted in a timely manner.

o Efficiently perform all assigned record keeping.

o Ensure all confidential information is protected.

o Work cooperatively with other West Cook YMCA staff members.

• Child Development

o Observe, assess and document each child's health, skills, behavior, growth and development.

o Provide opportunities for the children to develop positive self-images and experience success.

o Identify any developmental concerns regarding the children and follow established protocol.

• Curriculum

o Help to plan developmentally appropriate opportunities, which promote the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of each child.

o Work with lead teacher to integrate individualized planning into curriculum and lesson planning.

• Classroom Environment

o Establish and maintain a classroom environment which includes positive guidance techniques that meets state and local licensing regulations, YMCA best practice guidelines and NAEYC Performance Standards

o Ensure that all children are under appropriate supervision at all times.

o Develop and maintain an attractive, clean, safe and engaging environment that encourages children's independence and self-selection of activities.

o Use Universal Precautions at all times.

• Parent Involvement

- Work with lead teacher to ensure completion of at least one Parent/Staff conference for each child

- Encourage and provide opportunities for parent participation in the program.

- Provide examples and ideas for educational activities for parent/child participation at home.

- Develop effective partnerships with families.

• Other

o Attend all required meetings and trainings, including supervisory trainings.

o Participate in after hours YMCA events on a rotating basis

o Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the job description.

o Follow all mandates of YMCA, as well as, state and local licensing bodies.
