Graphic new ad campaign targets 'texting and driving'

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Nearly 80 percent of teens and young adults admit to reading text messages while driving.  It's a fatal mistake for some drivers, which is why, for the first time, the Feds are launching a nationwide multi-million dollar ad campaign to combat distracted driving.

In the ad, a beautiful day drive between three laughing friends, takes a turn for the worse when the driver takes a second to reply to a text, missing a stop sign.

About 3,328 people were killed in distracted driving crashes in 2012.  Many were caused by texting.

Ten percent of all road deaths are caused by distracted drivers.

Michael Green a spokesman for AAA says for every 2 seconds you look away from the road you double your risk of being in a car crash.

“And it's really easy to see why just doing basic math, if you're driving 60 miles per hour and you look away for 2 seconds you've gone almost the length of half a football field," Green said.

The new ad also kicks off the first ever national distracted driving crack down April 10-15, when law enforcement will be aggressively ticketing drivers who text and drive.

Shaw says we should all learn from her family's story.

“In the seconds it took Liz to look away from the road and read my simple text it has changed our lives forever” she said.  

They made a promise together as a family to never text and drive again.

43 states and Washington DC ban text messaging for drivers of all ages.

    New Jersey high school students will be required to have CPR training starting this year. Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno signed a law Wednesday requiring the lesson for all public and charter school students in ninth through 12th grades. Guadagno is serving as acting governor with Gov. Chris Christie out of the state. It takes effect in the coming school year.
