Photo drone makes waves at Pinellas beach

Posted: Updated:

You probably don't expect too much privacy when you're on a public beach. But how would you feel if a drone was watching you, and taking pictures while you soak up the sun?

That's what's happening in Pinellas County.

A little two-pound drone caused a flap on Treasure Island, and it might lead to a new ordinance.

The drone is a quad-copter with a belly-mounted camera that streams video or images to the handler on the ground.

Gary Walker said he was just getting some flying time in. But some witnesses took issue with what they call an invasion of privacy.

"So I called 911 to let them know you've got some pervert out here on the beach recording not only people, adults, but children as well," Eric Rohner told FOX 13.

Walker said he's definitely not a pervert, and he's offended that anyone would use that term.

Walker saidthere's nothing wrong with what he's doing.

"If you look out on this beach any day, there are tourists taking pictures, there are cameras, there's video all over here," he said.

Treasure Island police don't have any concerns about the drone either.

But they plan to draft an ordinance for the city commission to consider that could restrict the use of drones.
