Let the spring sun thaw out your frozen love life

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It's time to let go of the long, cold winter that's gripped the tri-state area. Snow storms, brutal wind chills, and numerous uninvited visits from the polar vortex really shoved people indoors and sometimes into the warm arms of others.

"What happens when it snows is that people get depressed, people get a little more desperate to have that companionship and they end up attaching themselves to people they might not have dated otherwise," relationship expert Rachel Dealto says.

We found New Yorkers who agree that the frigid weather put a chill on their dating life.

"What would you say your dating life is like in the winter?"

"Cold, indoors, and alone" is how Philip describes his dating life this past winter.

"It's been a slow winter," Brandon says.

But now that spring has officially sprung, the birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and the days are getting longer. This change in season brings around a change in perspective.

"Sun, and just being able to be outside makes you happier," Dealto says. "It changes the way that you look at yourself, which changes the way you get into relationships."

"They always say that winter is coupling season because you want to hibernate with someone," Alexandra says. "Summer is kind of when you break up with the person because they are so many more options when everyone comes out of the house."

Therefore, the temperatures are not the only thing rising around here. So is people's interest in dating.

"There is a mood shift," Brandon says. "A definite more excitement."

Dealto describes spring as that "middle zone when we are getting ourselves ready to feel great about ourselves and feel that sexy vibe."

And get ready now, folks! More people outside enjoying the milder weather mean more eyes checking you out. In spring, people are also starting to shed layers, so now you start seeing more bodies, and people are looking more attractive.

"Or maybe they had a rough winter and they need to get back to the gym," Dealto says. "Spring is where that transition happens."

Two-thirds of people find shorts and bathing suits easier on the eyes than sweaters, scarves, and boots, according to a weather underground survey.

"You don't have to bundle up, so you can show a little more," Vicki says. "Maybe that gets the guys' attention."

"Well with spring, you have to get back in shape, though," Nicholas says. "Shake off the extra pounds brought on by the holidays and all that stuff."

So if you're single and ready to mingle, Dealto says you should do three things: first, go to places where other people you would be attracted to are, like the gym; second, sign up for an online dating site; and third, get the word out to your friends.

With Mother Nature now on your side, this spring could lead you into a very hot summer.
