Surveillance video and victim appear to tell different story of beating

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Surveillance video from a party store where a woman said she was minding her own business when she was suddenly punched in the face, beaten and robbed shows a different side of the story.

Brianna Owen had told FOX 2's Amy Lange she was walking Monday around 1:15 a.m. with a friend to go inside the Grand House of Liquor party store in Detroit near Bennett Street and Telegraph Road, near McNichols Road. She says another friend was already inside.

All of a sudden, Owen says she was hit in the face and was then repeatedly hit in the face by a taller man.

"He was 6 [feet] 2 [inches tall]. I'm 5 [feet] 5 [inches tall]. I'm 120 pounds. I'm a little girl," she told Lange. She also said when she went inside for help, the cashier said this was "not [his] problem."

But the surveillance video obtained by FOX 2 shows a different version of the story.

Owen and her female friend appear to be arguing with some guys in a truck. Then, on video, Owen appears to be arguing with a white woman, who FOX 2 has learned is a prostitute in her 50s called Lady T. Then, a fight begins.

"I don't know why she's lying. You see everything in the report in the camera. I don't know why she is lying," says Sam, the owner of Grand House of Liquor.

Owen never did go into the store as she initially said. Her friend did, though, and also called 911 but the girls left before Detroit police arrived. Police are seen on the surveillance video arriving at the scene.

No one answered the door at Owen's house, though someone was apparently home. Our phone calls were not answered or returned.

The difference in stories does not change the fact that Owen was apparently the victim of an assault, but in a city with so much violence and racial tension there's no need to create more.

Detroit Sgt. Michael Woody reminds the public police will pursue charges if a person files a false police report.

The city of Detroit says workers and retirees have approved pension cuts, a crucial step to emerging from the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. The city reported results Monday after two months of balloting ended July 11. A judge still must hold a trial to determine if Detroit's overall bankruptcy plan is fair and feasible, but support from retirees is vital.
