Marine from North Texas killed at Camp LeJeune

DALLAS -

The Pentagon believes the fatal shooting of a North Texas Marine at Camp LeJeune was an accident.

Lance Cpl. Mark Boterf was from Crowley, south of Fort Worth.

The 21-year-old was on guard duty at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina when he was shot by a colleague.

A spokesman for the Defense Department said the single shot was a "negligent discharge."

The Marine who pulled the trigger remains in custody while the incident is being investigated.

Boterf's family described him as a compassionate man with a gentle heart, love for county and sense of duty. He also had a contagious and quirky smile.

"Mark dedicated his life to serving and making people happy. The last time he spoke to our family he said, 'I try to make people smile as they pass through the gate to make their day better,'" said Cpl. Richard J. Boterf, his brother.

The family thanked the community for prayers and support, and did not want to comment on the shooting investigation.
