Paterson's Pothole Problems Continue

Posted: Updated:
Paterson, New Jersey (My9NJ) - As spring slowly arrives, no one can deny that this year’s winter caused a lot more headaches for New Jersey drivers than others in recent memory. This year alone, New Jersey has faced an increase in the amount of potholes on our roads; many of which still need to be patched. In places like Paterson, drivers are still facing huge craters in the road leaving residents at a complete loss.

Some of the worst potholes can be found in many of Paterson's thoroughfares like the corner of Ward and Memorial Drive by the railway station. Residents around this area are completely fed up.

"Last week a guy lost his axle, he hit a hole. Boom, the whole axle came loose. Right in the street," one Paterson resident explained.

"They fixed two potholes, and left like ten other ones undone. What was the point of that? I don't get it. If you’re gonna fix an area, fix the whole area. Why are you gonna fix two potholes and leave like seven other ones undone," another resident commented.

In the city's defense, officials did allocate nearly half a million dollars for snow removal and pothole patches. The only problem with this however is that officials have nearly spent twice that much so far; leaving the extra costs to come out of next year’s budget.

In an effort to find a potential solution to this problem, former two-term Mayor Joey Torres, who is running for Paterson's top seat again this year, put forward a plan to fix many of Paterson's worst roads. He did acknowledge however, that a plan this big will require state money in order to accomplish this project.

“Phase 1 is to do a total reconstruction of 170 roads with a price tag of approximately $35 million," Torres said.

Torres also noted that although it would cost $35 million spread over a period of five years, the repave would be good for fifteen to twenty years depending on conditions.

Regardless of what plans come forward to fix the roads in Paterson, the city will continue to struggle on what some people regard as "driving on the surface of the moon" when passing through the city.
