Community Meets About Violence At Bartram High School

Posted: Updated:

"I'm really pissed off because I haven't heard anything in here that deals with the seriousness of the problem," said a community member to Philadelphia School District officials. He's one of many who spoke at a meeting at Bartram High Cool hoping to get answers about stopping the violence plaguing the school.

"Bad schools make bad students and not the other way around," said another man from the podium. Bartram has struggled with massive student fights, even staff getting hurt in incidents involving students. Some students recorded the bad behavior with their cell phones.

"It's a problem when we turn on our television and see a man lying on the floor that's been punched by a student," yelled one man.

District officials introduced Ozzie Wright, a retired Philadelphia educator and consultant it's hired to help restore safety and learning at Bartram.

"We have to make it a safe environment for students,  a safe environment for the staff and make this an institution of learning," said Wright to the crowd.

Some called out school administrators as the problem.

"I still see the school district making a lot of the same mistakes and we keep starting over with new Superintendents and new faces," said one man while others pointed the finger at parents.

"Not everybody can parent. Not everybody is a good parent," said Naeemeh Felder whose daughter graduated from Bartram.

"Parents we got to do our job and stop expecting the district to do it for us," said another parent.

Kenyatta Johnson says her son was a victim of violence. He was jumped by a group of kids.

"My son in 2010, his head was swollen. I still didn't get results from Bartram yet," she said.

Many parents left the meeting saying they didn't get any answers.

"I'm just disgusted a little," said one woman.

School officials say they've increased school security and added Philadelphia Police Officers. They've also started making physical improvements to the building so students will want to come there and respect it. Wright, the new co-principal, also says they're working on enforcing rules.
