Man Sexually Assaulted By Dating Site Acquaintance

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A meeting set up through an online dating website turned into a terrifying night for one man in Center City.

Police say a 34-year-old man, who was in town for an educational conference, was staying at the Hilton on the 1200 block of Arch Street on Wednesday.

He invited another man to his room after meeting him through the gay male dating website Grindr.com, police say.

The victim's face is blurred in surveillance video that was later released by police.

Investigators say the visitor sexually assaulted the man at gunpoint before making him withdraw $200 from each of five area ATMs, then forcing him to purchase four $500 VISA gift cards.

A short time later, when they arrived at a pub on the 2000 block of Walnut Street, the victim was able to run away.

The suspect also got away. He's described as a black male, 20-years-old, 5 feet 11 inches, with wavy hair, star tattoos on the back of his right hand, wearing a dark-colored jacket, dark blue jeans with rips, and tan Timberland boots.

If you see this suspect, police say don't approach him; call 9-1-1 immediately. To submit a tip, call 215-686-TIPS (8477) or text it to PPD TIP (773847).
