10 Dead, Dozens Hurt In Calif. Crash Involving Students' Bus

Updated:

A tragedy has unfolded on a northern California highway and involving a bus with dozens of high school students on board.

We now know 10 people were killed Thursday when a FedEx truck headed southbound crossed the median, hit a car and then smashed head-on into the bus, the California Highway Patrol says. Both vehicles burst into flames.

People who heard the crash raced to the scene but were unable to help as flames held them back. Witnesses say one man escaped with his clothes on fire.

The driver of the FedEx truck is among the dead, officials say.

The Los Angeles-area students were heading to Humboldt State University for a college tour. The bus was one of two that the admissions office chartered to bring prospective students to campus.

As of now, investigators say the truck driver might have been trying to avoid the car that was also involved in the crash.

But authorities will be back at the scene Friday to search for more information.
