Tips for infant sleep safety

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Each year in Michigan, nearly 150 infants die as a result of unsafe sleep environments. Sadly, these deaths are 100 percent preventable.

The Kohl's Injury Prevention Program at the Children's Hospital of Michigan offers these tips to new parents:

Safe Sleep  Steps - Baby

Baby should sleep alone in a crib, portable crib or bassinet.

Always put baby on back to sleep even when he/she can roll over.

No pillows, blankets, comforters, stuffed animals, bumper pads or other soft things should be in the sleep area.

Keep baby's face uncovered during sleep for easy breathing. Use a sleep sack instead of a blanket.

Don't allow anyone to smoke around the baby. This can cause respiratory complications.

Don't overheat the baby. Dress the baby in as much or as little clothing as you are wearing.

Use a firm mattress with a tightly fitted sheet.

Place baby in the same sleep position every time.

Offer a clean dry pacifier at nap time or night time.

Baby can sleep in an adult's room, but never in their bed. Co-Sleeping with your baby is extremely dangerous.

Stop Swaddling when baby can roll over.

Tummy and side-lying positions are dangerous and cause respiratory complications.

Safe Sleep Steps - Crib/Safe Sleeping Environment

Make sure your babies crib meets all federal safety standards. And assembled according to manufactures instructions.

Make sure the babies safe sleeping environment is away from any cords (electrical or window).

The safe sleeping environment should be free of any loose bedding, blankets, pillows, bumper pads, toys, etc..

Use a fitted crib mattress sheet on the crib.

Bassinets are safe to use, make sure baby still fits with in weight limits and can not roll over yet

Drop Side cribs should not be used anymore.

If you are using an older crib, make sure you can not fit a soda can through the slots.

Car seats, bouncers, swings are NOT for sleeping.

No sleeping with baby on couches, recliners, water beds, adult beds, etc

Tummy Time for Baby

Tummy time is a time when baby is awake and alert.

When babies have good head and neck control.

Helps promote muscle development and crawling.

Great time to bond and play with your baby.
