Cardiac Scans Offered In Waldwick

Posted: Updated:
Waldwick, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Many people deal with cardiac complications but you don't generally think about them when you're in school.

One school had free screenings recently so that young adults may be able to catch complications early on, so that they can be treated in the future.

Waldwick High School played host to The Sean Fisher Memorial Foundation and Cardiac Scan to set up body scanning machines in order to screen students. The Foundation was established in honor of Sean Fisher, who passed away on August 25th, 2008.

Shelia Fisher, Sean's mother, spoke to why they started the foundation to begin these screenings.

"On our son's 13th birthday he collapsed from an undetected heart condition and subsequently passed away. To save parents from the shock and trauma from their kids passing from SCA, we started a foundation and we have a golf tournament that raises money for this every year," said Fisher.

So far 531 students have been screened since the program started 5 years ago, dozens have had significant abnormalities discovered.

Stephanie Root, who was performing the ultrasounds, said she saw a lot of normal hearts as well as things she's never seen before.

"Overall, in the last few weeks of doing schools, I've seen very abnormal features, some of them I've only seen in books," said Root.

Heart disease is very rare in young people, but early detection is key to preventing possible life threatening problems.

"Sean had to pass to make this happen, but thank god we are able to do this for other students," concluded Fisher.

Sadly, Jeter the pit bull puppy is missing. While dogs go missing all the time, there are two specific things that distinguish this story from others. First, several witnesses say Jeter didn't wonder off and that they saw Jeter get taken. Second, the community has rallied in a huge way to help find the loveable pup.

Empty spaces are popping up all over Atlantic City with the closing of three major casinos: Revel, Trump Plaza, and Showboat. Even with all of this going on, the city is still trying to use eminent domain to take away the home of an Atlantic City local legend, Piano Man Charlie Birnbaum. Birnbaum has tuned pianos for icons like: Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, and John Legend. He's been a resident of Atlantic City in the same home for over 50 years.
