Sixth graders under fire for 'sexting'

Posted: Updated:

It's a sign that younger kids are not immune to the social media pressures, and perils, faced by teenagers and adults.

Nearly a dozen sixth grade students are at the center of a sexting scandal.

Hadley Middle School administration contacted police about it on Monday and informed parents three days later.

"In this case with the potential of sexting being that there are photographs or inappropriate language, it could be in the area where if adults were involved, it could be considered child pornography," said Superintendent Michael Morrow.

A school administrator told FOX 32 News the investigation is focusing on inappropriate pictures and texts between a group of students. Police were called to ensure no adults were involved.

"You gotta supervise it, and watch…and actually follow up with what [your child] does," said a concerned parent.

This is the second school sexting scandal in a week. A small group of students were disciplined at Barrington Middle School over sexting.

"Unfortunately, this is happening and it's a part of what has evolved in our society with the social media issue. We're trying to take it for our kids as a learning opportunity. We're gonna spend some time tomorrow talking about the risks of social media…," added Morrow.

Administrators said the incident occurred off campus, outside of school hours.

The Will County Sheriff's Department is still investigating the incident at Hadley, while the administration plans to teach students about the dangers before or after they press send on their mobile devices.
