New Jersey Golden Gloves Final

Posted: Updated:
Jersey City, New Jersey (My9NJ) - The Golden Gloves, featuring some of the best in amateur boxing, is taking place in Jersey City for the very first time and the finals are Saturday.

The two finalists are Tony Rivera and Denzels Stevens who train at the same gym in Jersey City.  They will face off for the very first time in the title fight.

“We’re going to get in there and do what we gotta do and may the best man win,” Denzels said.

Rivera’s trainer Luis Cancino said this is more than boxing. The training, the commitment, and bonding that goes into competing keeps these kids off the hard streets of Jersey City, Cancino says.

“It’s very important for this it keeps the kids away from the street and school education because that’s what we teach first. Education if first for them and this is what counts. At the end of the night they’re both winners. Jersey City should be proud with both of them,” Luis stated.

Denzels Stevens, started boxing at age 9 with his dad at home to learn self-defense against bullies in the neighborhood. Former Heavy Weight Champ, Gerry Cooney, came to see these young boxers train and even gave some advice to pump them up.

“I remember when I was 16 the first time at a meet he was 6’4” and 160 pounds. He had to wet me down to see me but I won the middle weight championship that year and it changes my life, gave me hope and life and it gave me direction. That’s what these guys are getting you can see the life in their eyes, man. That’s the most exciting thing in the world to be here to see these guys,” Gerry exclaimed.

The takes place Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Pershing Field Ice Ring in Jersey City.

The town of Hoboken, New Jersey is cracking down on Uber cars driving in and picking up passengers in the city. Uber is an app that you can use to request a car service to pick you up, but city officials say they are not licensed to operate in town. Marcus Enriquez was actually thrown out of an Uber car by a Hoboken police officer. He said he was on his way to work outside of the Hoboken taxi stand when a cop knocked on the window, kicked him out of the car and ticketed the Uber driver.
