President Obama says the right to vote is under attack

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Just days after a report detailed Reverend Al Sharpton's role as an FBI informant in the 1980s, President Barack Obama praised him and the National Action Network at the annual convention.

Obama gave the keynote speech of the four-day convention in New York City. He slammed Republicans on several issues, including what he describes as the erosion of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

"The stark, simple truth is this: The right to vote is threatened today in a way that it has not been since the Voting Rights Act became law nearly five decades ago," he said.

The president is looking to mobilize Democratic voters to fight back against state voting requirements and early balloting restrictions recently passed in several states. It is considered a key issue for the White House ahead of the midterm elections.

I am not against reasonable attempts to secure the ballot. We understand that. There has to be rules in place," Obama said. "But I am against requiring an ID that millions of Americans don't have."

No fundraisers for the president during this trip to Manhattan. After the speech, the president and first lady Michelle Obama had dinner in the city and took in a Broadway show: "Raisin in the Sun," starring Denzel Washington.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
