NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - A lunar eclipse known as a red moon or "blood moon" was visible in the Tristate area on Tuesday.  

It started early in the morning, and was the first of four such lunar eclipses over the next year and a half.

The blood moon appeared during what is the first total lunar eclipse in two years.

A lunar eclipse happens when a full moon aligns with the sun and Earth. The Earth's shadow is cast across the moon, blocking the rays from the sun.

The moon turns red during this type of eclipse because the sunlight is refracted, similar to the way it is bent during a sunset.

The moon appeared dark gray at first and then turn red.  The eclipse began at 1:58 a.m. Tuesday, and lasted for more than three hours.

The best viewing time was when everything was perfectly aligned, starting at 3:07 a.m., and lasted about 80 minutes.

Three other blood moons will happen on Oct. 8, April 4, 2015 and Sept. 28, 2015.  Lunar eclipses are safe to watch without any protective wear.
