Service dogs trained in Westchester changing people's lives

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

For the past 20 years, Monica La Peter, a breast cancer survivor, has relied on either a wheelchair or a walker to get around. Soon Monica will regain some of her independence. She is one of several disabled persons who will be going home with a service dog.

Since birth, two retrievers, now 2, have received extensive training as part of the East Coast Assistance Dog Program in Westchester County. For the past two weeks, owners like Shirley Keller, 83, have also been training with their dogs for hours every single day.

These service dogs are trained to do almost any household chore. Quint helps Maurice Levine do his laundry. The 22-year veteran of the Army was injured in a bomb blast in Afghanistan and has partial paralysis. Quint helps Maurice with almost every single daily activity, giving new meaning to the phrase "man's best friend."
