Under a plan being considered in Trenton, Belmar would be prevented from charging people $7 for beach badges because it accepted money from the federal government to replenish Belmar Beach and rebuild the boardwalk. The plan is raising concern because the badge fees help to pay for cleaning, lifeguards and police at the beach, according to News12.
The bill, first sponsored by Republican state Sen. Michael Doherty, would create "The Shore Municipalities Sales and Use Tax Collection Fund." This fund would dedicate 2 percent of taxable receipts collected under the sales and use tax in the shore municipalities to the shore municipalities of origin, according to News12.
