Posted: Updated:

A Midlothian police officer is in critical condition after a crash involving a semi-truck.

It happened Thursday afternoon as Officer Heather Phares was driving home from a special assignment with the local school district.

Her Ford pickup rear ended a big rig that was carrying steel on west Highway 287 in Midlothian.

Firefighters had to cut the 22-year-old from her truck.

She suffered traumatic head injuries and is now in surgical ICU at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Officer Phares has been with the Midlothian Police Department for about a year and a half.
