Michaels security breach, 2.6 million cards exposed

Posted: Updated:

Almost three million credit card numbers may have been stolen from a data breach happening at Michaels Arts & Crafts Stores.

Hundreds of stores were hit by hackers including some stores here in Arizona.
Michaels stores all over the country are affected by that security breach including stores right here in the valley with 19 of those stores affected. Stores in Scottsdale to Goodyear, Surprise to Casa Grande.

Most of Michaels customers we talked out outside of Michaels had no idea there was a data breach.

"I didn't know about it so I'll go home and check my account I guess," said Lindsay Greene.

2.6-million credit card numbers may have been compromised at Michaels and their sister store Aaron brothers.

"I did get a new bank card, but I don't know if that was just that time of the year or not," said Greene.

"I'm hoping that they take better precautions to secure our credit cards because we enjoy shopping at Michaels," said victoria Bellomo.

It's the same type of malware attack that hit target stores months ago. Michaels say it happened between may of last year to January of this year. The hackers only believed to have taken credit cards and expiration dates, and not other personal information like names, addresses, or pin numbers.

Michaels has an information page on their website telling customers how to protect themselves one of the things they suggest is to check your banking statement to make sure there are no unauthorized charges

"I do check in with the bank almost daily to make sure that may charges are accurate because it does happen here it has actually happened on my gas card as well so I think its just one of those things where there are predators in everything," said Jennifer Nitro.

If you're victim of this latest breach, Michaels says they'll pay for free credit monitoring for a year.

"It's a hassle for people that have to deal with that you have to change your credit cards there could be other ramifications of that," said Nitro.
