Group against egg farm construction protests Easter egg hunt

Posted: Updated:

Protesters were at a valley Easter egg hunt this morning.  They're protesting an egg farm, setting up shop in Tonopah.

They were not carrying Easter baskets; instead protesters carried signs outside an Easter egg hunt at Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park Saturday.

Linda Butler is the co-chair of S.T.O.P.P otherwise known as Save Tonopah by Opposing the Poultry Plant.

Eggs for the egg hunt were provided by Hickman Family Farms which is also building a large eggplant, on 350 acres, half a mile west of Tonopah.

"We have a lot of concerns health issues water issues," said Linda Butler.

"It's a state of the art facility, and I don't think there's legitimate concerns," said Billy Hickman.

Billy Hickman, the vice president of operations for Hickman Farms, Says they're building on land designated for agriculture.

But some think the smell alone will drive people and business away.

"It is a half a mile from our downtown area. Our RV park that supports people all year long our two mineral springs that have resorts their business will close they are right next to the Hickman property," said Butler.

"We've had supporters, we've had people even at the community meetings were glad you're coming, you're going to provide jobs. There's no jobs out here, and we're tired of driving into Phoenix, and it will be right there," said Hickman.

Butler says they have attorney's who are trying to stop the eggplant from building, but right now it's still on course to open this fall.

"We're on schedule, we're putting up steel right now, the first chickens hopefully will be housed end of August," said Hickman.

"They're in the process of building, but they can be stopped," said Butler.
