Famous Snowy Owl Released Into Wild

Posted: Updated:

A rare snowy owl that gained worldwide attention after being found injured in downtown Washington D.C. earlier this year is calling the Twin Ports his home.

Dubbed D.C. Snowy, the lively little guy has been recouping at the University of Minnesota's world renowned Raptor Center. Experts assumed he was hit by a bus in our nation’s capital in January.

After a brief stint at an east coast rehab center, he was shipped to Minnesota where an expert replaced the bird's damaged and burned feathers with ones from a separate carcass.

After consulting an area biologist, Raptor Center executive director Julia Ponder determined Snowy was too lively to make the trip back east, and decided to release him nearby.

"Very, very nice, powerful wing beats, uh, showed good strength. We had evaluated it quite well down at the center in the cities, uh, but yes, he flew wonderfully," said Ponder.

Another female snowy owl that shared cages with Snowy was released shortly after.

However, Ponder says they're a loner species, and most likely won't keep up the friendship in the wild.
