There is a frantic game of "my list is bigger than your list" going on in this town as the two main combatants to become the next speaker of the Michigan House are trying to one-up each other.

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) - After a three-week Spring break, state lawmakers return to the Capitol this week to begin the forced march to the next break sometime around the end of June.  And they will meet this deadline because most of them are itching to get out on the hustings to run for re-election.

During this most recent hiatus, many knocked on doors.

Rep. Pat Somerville (R-New Boston) is reportedly among the best at burning up the shoe-leather.  He's motivated cause he has a huge target on his back. The Democrats want to take him out as he hails from a district the D’s need to regain control of the Michigan House.

So what did he find out there regarding the issue that won’t go away: Fixing the roads.

“Most people told me they were not following this very much,” the second term lawmaker reports.

Not following this?

These must have been all the citizens who don’t drive or have a chauffeur. Seventy-five percent of the 1000 or so doors he knocked, did not have a clue.

Come on.  They had a live breathing lawmaker on their door step and they didn’t have enough knowledge to nudge him on the road issue?  Oh they did tell him not to raise their taxes to do it.

Maybe he should have asked them about how poorly the Tiger bullpen is again this year?

Anyway, Mr. Somerville dutifully tried a “Cliff-notes” approach to bringing them up to speed but most visits were under five minutes and try informing the public in that time skimpy frame.

On the other hand Rep. Tom Cochran (D-Lansing) got plenty of comments, most of them polite, advising him to “do something.”

That was the message House GOP Speaker Jase Bolger shared with the house transportation committee the other day.  Here’s what he heard back in Calhoun County:  Stop talking and start doing.

Let the fun begin.
