DART mechanic killed in bus accident

Posted: Updated:
DALLAS - A man who was trying to repair a Dallas Area Rapid Transit bus was accidentally killed late Monday night.

Spokesman Morgan Lyons confirmed the mechanic at a DART maintenance facility, 61-year-old Terry Tatum, was preparing to work on a bus when it rolled back and pinned him.

Other employees found him, called 911 and tried to help, but they were not successful. The injured mechanic was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Tatum had reportedly worked for DART for around 10 years and leaves behind a family.

Lyons said accidents like these are very rare, even though vehicles are constantly moving in and out the maintenance facility.

There will be an investigation, he said.

Tatum’s family lives in Terrell. They say he was a father of three who was born and raised in Dallas, and he served in the Army National Guard for more than 20 years as a mechanic.

He would have celebrated his 42-year anniversary with his wife in just a few months.

Family members say Tatum was big on safety, so they were shocked to hear how he died.
