Missing 12-year-old Heath boy likely committed suicide, police say

Posted: Updated:
HEATH, Texas - The missing 12-year-old boy who was found dead Tuesday night near Lake Ray Hubbard likely committed suicide, police said.

Heath police said the boy was reported missing to police around 9 p.m. His parents said he liked to walk in the woods behind their house in the 1700 block of White Road, but always came home after about an hour.

Search teams found his body in the woods a short time later. Police said he had a gunshot wound to the head, not in the leg as FOX 4 previously reported.

Police also said they found a gun that had come from the home next to the boy's body.

They are treating the case as an apparent suicide and said there is no existing threat to residents in the area.

"Anybody that knew him or came in contact with him we'll absolutely be talking to them and trying to piece this together," said Heath Lt. Scott Trammel. "We're just as puzzled as everyone else and we want answers just as bad as everyone else."

The boy's name has not yet been released, but sources told FOX 4 he attended Amy Parks Elementary School in Heath.

A parent-led prayer vigil was held there and some STAAR tests were canceled.
