Funeral held for Dallas hit-and-run victim Ethan Vasquez

DALLAS - Family and friends said their final goodbyes to a 13-year-old Dallas boy killed in a hit-and-run crash.

Hundreds attended the funeral service for Ethan Vasquez on Thursday morning at Lakeside Baptist Church in Dallas.

Ethan died last week after a stolen van slammed into the car his mother was driving. Sandy Vasquez was critically injured, but she was released from the hospital in time for the funeral.

"I wish I could just see him for a moment," said Christian Vasquez, Ethan's brother. "I don't even know what I would say. But seeing him would be enough."

The suspects, Dagoberto Castanon and Rogelio Avila, were arrested in Florida on murder charges. They're awaiting extradition to Texas.

Ethan's father is an officer with the Cedar Hill Police Department. Sgt. Victor Vasquez spoke about his son during the funeral and said he was always so anxious to see what he would become.

"We're going to make it through this," Victor Vasquez said. "As hard and as difficult as this is, we're going to make it through this."

The seventh grader who attended Travis Middle School was talented and gifted. He participated in theater and debate and even built his own computer when he was just 12 years old, according to the program at the service.

Police officers from several different cities were there to support the family.
