Berkeley Fire Residents Returning Home From Wildfire Evacuations

Posted: Updated:
BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. - Lines of cars waited to get back in their homes after nearly 8 hours of being evacuated.

"We got evacuated about one this afternoon and haven't been able to get home since," said Anthony Altieri. He and his wife Janet were among hundreds of people forced out of their homes on Northern Boulevard. It happened after a brush fire started in Berkeley Township in Ocean County Thursday afternoon.

"We tried to cut through Beachwood but the flames are blazing still," said Janet.

As flames spread and smoke billowed they took what they could fearing they wouldn't be able to return.

"We brought medication and the deed to the house. That's our main concern right here," said Janet.

Holly Bunnell and her daughter Shannon had an up close view of the wildfire from their home but didn't have to evacuate. They watched in awe and took pictures.

"I have faith in our volunteers. I think they're going to keep us safe," said Holly.

An airplane and helicopters flew over the wildfire dumping water. Crews attacked it from the ground. Jim Burns is the President of the Berkeley Township Council.

"You can see how close it is to this house here now," said Burns as we watched firefighters. Just as some people were being allowed back home officials announced four other wildfires including a second one in Berkeley. The Altieri's fear they won't be back home for long.

"We are not going to sleep very well. We'll sleep with an ear to the door and to the phone to see if we're going to get evacuated again. We'll leave our cars loaded with clothes and stuff," said Anthony Altieri.
