Newark's Cherry Blossoms Are A Sight To See

Posted: Updated:
Newark, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Over the next three weeks more than 100,000 tourists will be visiting the Newark, New Jersey area to view a national treasure, the biggest cheery blossom growth in the United States blooming at the historic Branch Brook Park.

Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo says that when he became county executive back in 2003, the number of cherry blossoms was dwindling down to about 1,000 trees, but then the county spent $50 million bring the cherry blossoms back and now they are a sight to see!

DiVincenzo’s park is first in cherry blossoms here in the United States with 4,300 trees, but he plans to expand and hopes to have 5,000 by next year. This will eventually bring Branch Brook Park to outnumber the amount of cherry blossom trees in Washington D.C., which is a place that’s known for their cherry blossoms.

“They can print money very very quickly so we always got to make sure that we stay ahead of Washington because our slogan here is ‘Putting Essex County First’,” DiVincenzo stated.

There are fourteen types of cherry blossoms in the New Jersey park and they’ll be blooming at different rates over the next couple of weeks. When walking through you can see a few tourists that come from different parts of the world just to see the cherry blossoms in Branch Brook Park.

Just like Washington D.C.’s cherry blossom festival that brings many people to visit, Newark too has a festival during the first week of April. It is not as well known or have as many sightseers but there are hopes in the future it will soon bring many more tourists.

The reasoning behind the cherry blossom excitement dates back to 1912 when Japan gifted the United States 3,000 cherry blossom trees. Every time Washington D.C. celebrates their festival, they are also celebrating that friendship between the two nations.

While Newark isn't always known for having the best news come out of the city, the cherry blossoms bring a positive feeling to the entire county.

StubHub, which is a website that provides services for buyers and sellers for tickets to sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment events, has been hacked. StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
