1,800 illegal guns seized in first 17 weeks of year

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Chicago Police have seized more than 1,800 illegal guns since the start of 2014, the department announced Monday.

The news came after a bloody weekend in the city that saw four people killed and at least 35 others wounded in shootings. That underscores “the need for stronger state and federal laws to stem the flow of illegal guns and support ongoing public safety efforts,” according to a Chicago Police statement.

“There is a concerted effort in this city to make a positive difference—in the hard work of our officers, in those working in the city’s newly strengthened prevention programs, and in countless local leaders and residents working to improve our communities,” police Supt. Garry McCarthy said in the statement.

Chicago Police recover more illegal firearms than any other city in the nation, according to the department.

Police said earlier this month that overall crime is down about 25 percent compared to this time last year, with Chicago’s lowest first-quarter murder total in 56 years.

“None of us—not one—will rest until everyone in Chicago enjoys the same sense of safety,” McCarthy said.
