MESA, Ariz. - A homeowner called 911 in the the early morning hours to report a drive by shooting near the intersection of Apache Trail and Broadway.  Four people live in the house and Maricopa County Sheriff's officials say one person was struck by bullets.

Crime scene tape surrounded the small intersection of Balsam and 97th Street.  The home at the center of the investigation was riddled with bullet holes.

"These people seem to be really nice.  It's scary because I'm by myself.. I don't know.. this is just weird to be happening," said Tina Odom, a neighbor.

Neighbors didn't hear the shots ring out, but are voicing concern over what happened.

The sheriff's office was called around 2 a.m. after the woman who allegedly owns the home called them to report that someone drove by and opened fire.

One roommate -- a man in his 20s, was shot in the leg and taken to a local hospital.  He is expected to be okay.

"There's so many possible situations right now.  We're early on in the investigation to determine was this a random act or was there something else behind it?" said MCSO's Joaquin Enriques.

MCSO says it does believe what happened is an isolated incident and not random.  Neighbors just hope the violence that once plagued the area won't return.

"It was like cops were overhead all the time, but lately it's been okay," said Odom.

MCSO says the suspect may have been driving a gray or black car, possibly a Volkswagen.

Police say the current residents have not been in the home for a long time and that investigators have been questioning people who live in the area.
