Former DPD officer indicted for shooting mentally ill man

Posted: Updated:
A former Dallas police officer has been indicted for shooting a mentally ill man while on duty.

Cardan Spencer is accused of aggravated assault after he shot Bobby Bennett in October 2013.

Police went to the area after Bennett’s mother called 911, asking for help in dealing with her son.

Surveillance video shows Bennett sitting in a chair when Spencer and his partner arrive on scene.

Shortly after, Bennett stands up with his hands by his side, and Spencer shoots him in the abdomen.

Spencer and his partner both claimed they thought Bennett was coming at them with a weapon.

Spencer was fired last November.
