New Castle Police Seek Suspects In Sneaker Robberies

Posted: Updated:
A trip to the basketball courts in Weiss Park in Newark, Delaware, proved to be dangerous and costly for two local teenagers.

They boys say they were attacked and robbed of their pricey and popular Nike sneakers. The latest in a string of highend sneaker robberies.

Once in late March, then again last week, teenagers playing ball in the sprawling park were tackled by a pair of suspects and robbed of their expensive sneakers.

“The Nike brand of Jordans and the Kevin Durants seems to be what the thieves are targeting,” New Castle Police Officer Tracey Duffy said. “They're estimated to be about $160 to $200 plus dollars.”

Darryl Rucker was walking his dog, Deuce, in the park Tuesday night wearing a brand new pair of Nike sneakers, and he wasn't too happy to hear about thieves targeting kids for their sneakers .

"That aint right, you known what I mean. I'm sure somebody worked hard to pay for those sneakers,” he said.

Just last Friday police say two more victims reported being robbed of their Jordan sneakers and KD's in local neighborhoods after an online connection led to meetings with potential buyers. Both victims were robbed. In the Catherine Court ripoff, the victim was also struck in the face.

Police say teens need to be more careful and also avoid meeting unknown people online and then in-person.

“It's really unsafe, especially for young people and young adults,” Officer Duffy said.

Two suspects, a 15 and 16 year old were arrested in the first two incidents. Police are searching for four suspects in the two online incidents. Investigators did recover the stolen sneakers in the first two robberies in the park.
