Body of man recovered from Montrose Harbor identified

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A woman who was pulled from Lake Michigan in critical condition early Monday and a man who was found dead in the water Tuesday morning had apparently decided to go swimming in the lake, police said.

Emergency crews initially responded about 2:05 a.m. Monday to the call of a person in the water near Montrose Harbor, police said.

The woman, thought to be in her 20s, was pulled out of the water and taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital, where she remains in critical condition Wednesday morning, police said.

At the time, fire officials continued to search for a possible second person but did not immediately find anyone in the water.

A Chicago Police Marine Unit dive team found the man’s body about 11:10 a.m. Tuesday, also near Montrose Harbor, police said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified him as 20-year-old Victor Martinez of the 2100 block of North Latrobe Avenue. An autopsy to determine the cause and manner of his death is scheduled for Wednesday.

Police said the two appeared to have been swimming in the lake when they were overtaken by strong currents.
