CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A serious warning has been released about a common medical procedure for women.

Federal officials say a laparoscopic hysterectomy can spread a deadly form of cancer.

The procedure is meant to be a less invasive hysterectomy. But the FDA says about one in 350 women have an undetected type of uterine cancer. When the tool is used to remove tissue, it can end up spreading the cancer cells.

There's an online petition to ban the procedure all together.

Women are encouraged to visit the FDA and American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology websites for more information.
