A teacher's union claims a principal at a junior high school is using some coarse language.
Members of the United Educators Association filed a complaint against the principal of Dan Powell Intermediate School in Everman because of some questionable text messages.
According to the complaint, principal Mya Asberry used profanity and insulted her teachers and staff, and the UEA contends she did it all on a texting app so that she wouldn't get caught.
The complaint includes several screen grabs of text messages Asberry apparently sent to staff.
"Too bad our kids don't have good teachers who will even research and use the resources they are provided!" one of the messages said.
"It seems the more we do the worse they get! Trifling [expletive]!,” said another.
"But it was so egregious, I thought it was absolutely necessary to report it to the state board for them to investigate and take a look at her certificate,” said Steven Poole with the UEA.
One of Asberry's staff brought the screen grabs to the UEA’s attention.
Another text reads, “They not gon [expletive] me out of this award!"
"She's a finalist for a statewide principal of the year, so yes, she puts on a very good public image,” said Poole. “I was shocked when i read what she actually wrote, but again, there is no place in the schools for what she had to say and the attitude she has for the students and teachers.”
In one text, it appears she's referring to test scores, but Poole says it seems a bit racist.
"Boy those Spanish ones don't look good! Perhaps we should try ENGLISH, ” reads another text reportedly sent by Asberry.
"It's borderline,” said Poole.“You can take it as it's written. It definitely raises a lot of questions about what she actually means about her students.”
Parents FOX 4 spoke with shook their heads when they read the complaint, but followed that up with praise for Asberry.
"My daughter really, really does like her,” said parent Sylvia Saldivar. “I mean, like I said, all the meetings, even when we've spoken here…I know there's been field trips. She's always been awesome. She's always treated us with respect and everything.”
FOX 4 called Everman ISD on Monday and was told an assistant superintendent would call us back. He didn’t.
FOX 4 also emailed him and the superintendent, but we haven’t gotten a response.
Additionally, FOX 4 went to the school and asked to speak to the principal, but we were told she was in a meeting.
